Hospitalization-
Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center provides a full service hospital for
the comprehensive care of horses. We currently have the ability to hospitalize
fifteen horses in stalls, one of which is equipped for isolation purposes.
Additional paddocks are available for turnout of long-term patients, and
day boarders. Twenty-four-hour intensive care is provided for all critical
cases with the full utilization of our specialized equipment, facility,
expert doctors and support staff. Additionally, clients may wish to hospitalize
cases where frequent treatments are difficult to administer at home. We
urge clients to bring complex medical or lameness cases to the hospital
where the full utilization of our specialized equipment, the facility,
expertise, and staff can be brought to bear.
Surgery- Our modern surgical
suite includes a hydraulic assisted table, overhead lift, gas anesthesia
machine, ventilator, and EKG machine. This array of equipment has proven
effective for a large variety of surgeries ranging from abdominal explorations
to orthopedics. Our consulting surgeon is available for a wide variety
of more complicated in-house soft tissue and orthopedic procedures, including
arthroscopy, as well as referral surgical cases.
Radiology-
We provide a large overhead mounted x-ray machine capable of producing
high quality radiographs of most portions of a horse's anatomy. Most of
our radiographic images are captured digitally with our new digital xray
processor which allows immediate review of an xray exposure. The delay
in developing and retaking images has practically been eliminated. Radiographs
are taken and developed immediately on premises. Two portable x-ray machines
are available for limited field studies. Our consulting radiologists interpret
and report on all radiographic studies produced to insure highest quality
radiographic diagnoses.
Ultrasonography- A
variety of ultrasound technologies are available for evaluating tendons,
ligaments, joints, and the chest and abdomen. Dr. Langdon Fielding and
Dr. Jill Higgins are available for abdominal, chest, and a variety of
soft tissue ultrasound exams most days of the week. These doctors are
available to both our regular clients and for referral from other area
veterinarians. We continue to refer orthopedic cases to Dr Carol Gillis
who visits the Loomis area several times a month.
Endoscopy- A newly purchased
hospital endoscopy unit now allows our staff veterinarians to conduct
a variety of exams at any time. Both pediatric and full size endoscopes
are available for detailed examinations of the equine throat, esophagus,
reproductive tract and bladder. A gastroscope is also available for evaluation
of the equine stomach.
Equine
Reproduction- Equine fertility and the care of young foals
are special interests of our practice. Our work with large breeding farms
as well as continued re-education and state-of-the-art equipment makes
this an area of expertise. We have in depth experience with barren mares,
stallion infertility, artificial insemination, and the use of cooled and
frozen semen. Dr. Fielding is available to assess pregnancy problems in
mid and late term.
Dentistry
The veterinarian staff of the clinic is trained to identify and correct
a range of problems found in the equine oral cavity. This work might be
as routine as the removal of wolf teeth or as complicated as balancing
a badly worn mouth with problems including hooks, ramps, and steps. The
bulk of the dentistry is done with motorized equipment and a full mouth
speculum. Take a look at the dentistry article under the Health button
on this website for more detail. Dental work can be scheduled at the clinic
or at your horse's stable. Unique problems are referred to a dental specialist
who can see cases at the clinic.
Routine and Corrective Shoeing-
Several experienced farriers who maintain a private clientele also shoe
horses at the clinic. They can be contacted directly by clients to schedule
shoeing appointments. A listing of names and phone numbers can be found
under the "Health" button on the website. Look for "Farrier
Services at LBEMC. Their presence at the center allows close coordination
between farrier and veterinarian and allows current radiographs to be
taken when needed to guide corrective shoeing. Blake Brown has retired
from practice but is available for case consultations. He can be contacted
via email at hoofsense@jps.net
or by phone 916-663-2851.
Mobile Veterinary Units-Fully
equipped ambulatory hospital units allow many services to be provided
directly at your ranch, barn or home.
Equipment for Emergency and Critical Care
LBVC serves as both a primary and referral emergency center. We have a
24-hour in-hospital technical staff and emergency doctors that can see
cases in the field or in the clinic. We continue to increase the capacity
and level of care that our hospital provides.
Equipment for Emergency and Critical Care
:
We have
a complete in-house laboratory with the capability of performing complete
blood counts, blood chemistry, fibrinogen, blood gas and electrolytes,
blood glucose and lactate with results ready in one to 20 minutes. A portable
blood pressure machine capable of reading systolic, diastolic, and heart
rate, gives the ability to read stall side blood pressures throughout
the day.
For our surgical, as well as medical patients, we have and electrocardiogram(ECG),
and a POET II capnograph with pulse oximetry to monitor end-tidal carbon
dioxide and oxygen saturation. We also have the ability to monitor Central
Venous Pressure throughout the day.
Treatments available:
- Oxygen - LBEMC has just acquired a portable unit
which allows us to meet a horse or foal with respiratory distress at
the trailer and begin treatment immediately. Central oxygen lines to
stalls in our ICU unit allows us to maintain a sick horse on oxygen
in the hospital until they are able to breathe effectively on their
own.
- Plasma - LBEMC provides stored frozen plasma and
has the ability to obtain fresh from one of our two blood donors. Living
at the clinic, “Val” and “Loosey” are ready
to give blood at a moments notice in an emergency situation. Plasma
can be needed for horses with certain bleeding disorders as well as
foals that do not have adequate immune protection. These situations
can be life threatening and require a facility that has plasma immediately
available.
- HBOCS - One of the newer products available in veterinary
medicine is Hemoglobin Based Oxygen Carrying Solutions. They contain
free hemoglobin that is not bound to a red blood cell. It can be used
when an immediate transfusion is needed and HBOCS do not require a cross-match.
They can be life saving since no time is wasted obtaining blood from
a donor.
